The End of the Penny: What It Means for Your Business
The U.S. Department of the Treasury has officially ended the production of the penny, marking a significant shift in how businesses and consumers handle cash transactions. As a result, Orrstown Bank can no longer obtain pennies from the Federal Reserve and will no longer be able to fulfill orders for rolled pennies for our clients.
While this change may require some adjustments, we’re here to help you navigate the transition smoothly.
Why Is Penny Production Ending?
The decision to discontinue the penny stems from long-standing concerns about its cost-effectiveness and practicality. Producing a single penny has consistently cost more than its face value, and its usage has declined significantly in recent years due to the rise of digital payments and rounding practices.
How This Affects Orrstown Bank Clients
If your business regularly orders pennies for cash transactions, you’ll need to begin adjusting your operations. Orrstown Bank will no longer be able to supply rolled pennies starting November 3, 2025, and we encourage you to begin planning for a penny-free future.
Tips for Transitioning Without Pennies
Here are a few practical ways to adapt:
- Round Cash Totals: Many businesses round transactions to the nearest five cents. This approach is simple and widely accepted.
- Adjust Pricing: Consider updating your pricing to minimize the need for pennies—e.g., ending prices in .00 or .05.
- Train Your Team: Update your cash handling procedures and train staff on how to manage transactions without pennies.
- Hold onto your existing pennies: We recommend keeping any pennies you have on hand for use in your own business operations, rather than depositing them with your cash deposits.
- Inform Your Customers: Clear communication helps customers understand the change and reduces confusion at the point of sale.
- Promote Digital Payments: Encourage card and mobile payments to reduce reliance on coins altogether.
